An answer engine is a system like ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews that returns a direct, synthesized answer instead of a list of links.
Answer engines read a question, retrieve and weigh sources, and write a single response, often naming specific brands or products. Being named in that response is the goal of answer engine optimization.
